On Saturday I completed a 34.6mi & 7,413ft elevation gain hike in the Great Smoky Mountains! This loop is by far one of the best in the entire park - having done it at least once for the past three years, it doesn’t get old! I started at Big Creek Ranger Station and took the Chestnut Branch Trail to the Appalachian Trail. Took the AT to the spur for Mt Cammerer, only to be greeted by thick clouds and several other hikers. Didn’t hang out too long and made the descent to Low Gap where I ran into dozens of other hikers heading to Cammerer. I continued on the AT for several more miles until merging onto the Balsam Mountain Trail, running into a good amount of thru-hikers on the way. The Balsam Mountain Trail is a amazing for solitude and was very surprised to run into 3 others who were checking off the trail for their GSMNP 900 list. After a few miles, I merged onto the Benton MacKaye trail, where several sections were flooded from the recent rains. As I got closer to Pretty Hollow Gap the trail got much better and I made the final climb to Mt Sterling- where once again the clouds rolled in right as I got there! After hopefully waiting for the clouds to move, I kept moving as it was getting late and still had the 6mi Baxter Creek Trail to tackle. Luckily the trail was in great condition besides a few blowdowns and was able to bang out that section and walk the last road mile back to the car.
